Principles of Unity

Shortly after the formation of this Group in April 2023 a set of guiding principles (a Constitution) was established through Consensus from the Membership.

A. Meetings of any kind of the Waitaki District Council should be publicly announced and open and/or live-streamed to the Public, limited only by the strictly limited grounds for Confidentiality under law.

B. Local Government's essential role in the welfare of Residents depends on careful use of funds and avoidance of waste and non-essential spending.

C. Basic district Policy must be made by elected Councillors and the voters, and not by unelected Staff.

D. Dictates of Central Government that are unreasonable and violate the best interests of Waitaki residents should be resisted by the Waitaki District Council.

E. Ratepayers and Residents should be proactive in their involvement with Council through Submissions and Meetings.

F. Any disagreement with the Council: Mayor, Councillors, or Staff must always be respectful and only concerned with official decisions and policies, and never of a personal nature.

The Oamaru Ratepayers & Residents Group is open to all people who share these Principles, with the exception of current Elected persons. We hope to provide an independent, sometimes critical, point of view with an impartial nature.
